Injectable Neurotoxins: The What, Why, and How

“Injectable neurotoxin” is a common term used to refer to injectable forms of botulinum neurotoxin, produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

This toxin was first discovered in the early 1800s, but It would take nearly another 200 years for its cosmetic benefits to be discovered. Finally, in 1989, onabotulinumtoxinA, better known as Botox, was first approved.

Today, a variety of slightly different formulations of injectable neurotoxins are available, such as Dysport, Xeomin and Jeuveau, but all work more or less the same way. When the toxin enters your body, it binds to neurons for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, ultimately leading to the neuron not being able to send or receive signals, causing muscle paralysis.

As scary as all this might sound, in reality, injectable neurotoxins are proven to be incredibly safe and effective treatments. They can create a more youthful look by eliminating wrinkles in the face, particularly the top third of your face, including crow’s feet, forehead creases, and so called “frown lines” between the eyebrows. In addition to reducing wrinkles, these treatments can also be used for things like TMJ, excessive sweating, and migraine.

Injectable neurotoxins are strategically injected into the muscle to get the desired effects. After injection, it takes about 3 to 7 days to see the final results, and results typically last three to six months. This treatment is well tolerated and gives few side effects, but you may see some redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site.
